FAQs

Loft conversion questions answered

The questions homeowners ask us most often about costs, planning, timings and our free quotation service.

How accurate is the online estimate?

It is an indicative range built from typical UK build costs for the conversion type, size, specification and region you enter. Most projects land within the range, but only a site survey can confirm a fixed price.

Is the service really free?

Yes. The online estimate and the follow-up survey are both free, and there is no obligation to proceed at any stage.

How long does the quotation form take?

About two minutes. There are eight questions and no measurements are required.

Will I be pressured into buying?

No. A specialist will contact you to arrange your free survey. If you decide not to proceed, that is the end of the matter.

Do I need planning permission?

Many loft conversions fall under permitted development. Flats, listed buildings, conservation areas, front-facing dormers and larger mansards usually need permission. Building regulations approval is always required.

How much head height do I need?

Around 2.2 metres from ceiling joist to ridge allows a straightforward conversion. Between 2.0 and 2.2 metres normally needs a dormer or roof alteration, and less than 2.0 metres may require more extensive structural work.

Can a trussed roof be converted?

Yes, though it costs more. Steel beams are installed to carry the loads before the truss webs can be removed.

How long will the work take?

Typically six to nine weeks on site for a dormer conversion, and up to fourteen weeks for a mansard, plus design and approvals beforehand.

Can I stay in the house during the work?

In most cases yes. The loft is usually sealed off from the rest of the home, with the main disruption occurring when the staircase is installed.

Does a loft conversion add value?

A well-executed loft conversion that adds a bedroom and bathroom commonly adds meaningful value, though the uplift depends heavily on local property prices and ceiling values.

Who will contact me after I submit the form?

Loft Conversion Quote, and a suitable loft conversion specialist covering your postcode area, to arrange your free survey.
